Dr Ong is a Consultant Anaesthesiologist. She graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and obtained a master’s degree in the field of Anaesthesiology from the National University of Singapore in 2007 and 2014 respectively. Her interests in pain medicine led her to further training in the subspecialty of acute and chronic pain.
Dr Ong consulted at both the Department of Anaesthesiology as well as the Pain Management Centre in Singapore General Hospital. Dr Ong currently practices anaesthesia at private hospitals in Singapore and is also a Visiting Consultant at Pain Management Centre, Singapore General Hospital.
Dr Ong was the Director of Clinical Services and Quality in the Anesthesiology Academic Clinical Program, where she oversees the Quality Improvement Initiatives within the SGH campus. She was heavily involved in QI projects within the department as well as the hospital. As a hospital QI coach, she has facilitated a number of projects within the Department of Anesthesiology. Within the institution, her other area of interest is opioid safety practices. She spearheaded a team looking into revamping opioid safety within SGH by piloting guidelines for the safe use of opioids. This is part of a nationwide program known as the Singapore Healthcare Initiative Network (SHINe).
In addition, Dr Ong is also heavily involved in patient safety and audit. She was the head of audit and safety within the Department of Anesthesiology at SGH and was involved in setting up a healthcare risk management system. This is being piloted in a new regional hospital in Singapore with plans of being eventually rolled out to the entire Singhealth cluster.
